Some will seek to convince you that it is not possible to get help for your loved one unless they really want to do it. This is a myth. Research has shown that those with low motivation often do just as well as those who appear more motivated.
Intervention (counselling) - “an orchesttrated attempt to compel a subject to ‘get help’ for an addiction or other problem.” If the patient is not motivated to get well we can help by conducting an Intervention either by coaching the family and friends by email or by employing an Interventionist to come to you.
A successful Intervention involves several family members or friends sitting down together with the individual with the aim of getting him / her into treatment. It will be well planned in advance with each person having a script to read to the patient giving positive things from their past; their achievements, their dreams or ambitions and then describing the way they are now in a non-critical, non-judgmental way. They will also be given the consequences if they do not undertake treatment.
Immediately following the Intervention the individual is normally taken directly to a rehab clinic provided they agree they do need help with their illness. This process can be complex and the help of a professional interventionist is often necessary. WayAhead Rehab has worked with several highly experienced and successful Intervention professionals and can provide you with their details should this approach be necessary.
